Eminence,

I just read your column of January 7, 2007. The issue you raised affected me personally. It happened to me as a young adult. Regardless of the age, the action by the Priest was inexcusable. This does happen to adult victims and we are many. I've heard all of the apologies before, but yours is the first one I have ever believed. I read your heart when you addressed comments to the families. Thank you so much. I only wish the Church had more Prelates with your heart.

I found the following section of your homily on racism very moving:
"Racism thrives on fear, but love casts out fear. Solidarity transforms relationships and connects us with each other. Fear and suspicion are changed into a sense of partnership in a community that truly recognizes the value of each and every person as irreplaceable and as precious in the eyes of God."

It's important to recognize the all-encompassing nature of God's love and to be aware that what is often the human substitute for that -- tolerance (which necessarily involves condescension) -- should not be something we are satisfied with.

As a member of St. Joseph Parish in York, PA. it has been a blessing to know and be "shepherded" by Capuchin Friars. Each year the Pro-Life Ministry buses to Washington to participate in the March for Life. Each year, before we walk, we raise our hearts in prayer at the annual Pro-Life Mass celebrated by the Friars. Cardinal O'Malley, your homily this year touched hearts and souls. It was so moving and forthright...not lukewarm, yet speaking the truth in love. If possible and with your permission I would like to obtain a copy of your words to share with my fellow Pro-Life "prayer warriors" and to print it in our next newsletter. Thank you for your witness and your leadership!
May Jesus bless you and Mary keep you,

I am from Olongapo City, in the PHILIPPINES. I enjoy reading and taking a look on the pictures you have posted on this web page. The information here is very helpful for me to know the latest events in the Archdiocese of Boston, even though I came from the Diocese of Iba. I even admire your Capuchin way of life that you strive to live even you are now an archbishop of a multi- cultural archdiocese and as a cardinal of the Church.

Keep up the good work! God bless you, your eminence.

I have a question about the sacrament of marriage. Why do parish priests demand a specific amount of donation ($400) to perform the sacrament. Jesus cast the moneychangers out of the Temple but everything in the Church today is about money. I haven't attended Mass in over a year because this occured during my daughter's marriage.

Cardinal Sean,

Great picture of the kids. THEY LOOK SO CUTE!!! My niece, who is two and a half, loves to walk around the house wearing her rosary beads like that.

It is very interesting to me to see pictures from masses celebrated by different cultures and ethnicities - Ethiopians, Guatemalans, etc.

Regarding Martin Luther King, Jr. - I remember reading some of his sermons including "A Knock At Midnight" when I was still an agnostic or aetheist or I-didn't-know-what. It was a real eye-opener and really touched a nerve. In it he spoke about moral relativism, state-sponsored oppression of religion, church-state relations during war, the seeming hopelessness of the modern secular/scientific age. My favorite was his reference to the "eleventh commandment" that Man has invented: "Thou shalt not get caught". His words really stayed with me and were a small part of what brought me eventually to Christ. Today they are more relevant than ever.

A copy of the sermon can be found at The Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute's website at
http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/mlkpapers/.

Thanks for the great blog post as usual.

God bless you,
