Cardinal Sean; Jerry from Ave in Parker, CO. again. Although a week behind in reading your BLOG I was pleased to see you did not rush into deciding how to proceed with future management of Archdiociasn Hospitals. In my 26+ years of Military Service I saw many unrealistic Deadlines in trying to get the job done. It invokes the saying "haste makes waste." No matter the amount of dileberation, glitches will not be discoveed until implementation no matter what the final course of action taken.
i pckup a book recently which was in our library and in the process of reading it. it is the autobiography of father paul marx, osb. what a guy. has done so much for preserving life.
i would assume that father marx is in retirement now. where is he located, someplace in minnesota? cant wait to finish this book. i would claim father marx an international hero.

Dear Cardinal Sean,

Mother Teresa of Calcutta said many times that mental illness represents Jesus' crown of thorns. She had a special concern and love for them.

I wanted to write and thank you for your concern for those who wear the "crown of thorns" of Our Lord. There was a nice article written in the Anchor on February 9th about the Guild.

As you know, I always tried to follow my vocation to offer support to those with mental illness and to raise awareness of their dignity. That is why I founded the Guild of St. Benedict Joseph Labre. www.guildbjlabre.com

Who is this saint? St. Benedict Joseph Labre is a particular patron for those suffering with mental illness and particularly depression. He had his own mental suffering, confusion and depression. Our patron gave it to God and became a great saint. Pope Leo XIII called St. Benedict Joseph "Holiness Itself".

There is more information on our website for anyone interested.

God Bless!

Your Eminence,
Dear Cardinal Sean

I am a little behind this month, but just finished reading the last 3 entries. I especially appreciated the 2/2 read and will make copies for my 91 and 90 year old married couple friends (Jim & Marge) to send in Florida. (They are not into computers - yet !!) They are so grateful and interested in the blog's message and they also pass around to their friends after reading. If you have a minute please say a Hail Mary for Jim who is undergoing chemo for head and neck cancer. It will mean a lot to them and me coming from you.

I, in turn will pray for all who comment in your blog and seem confused or upset by some of the church teachings or practices. We are all truly brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus and need to be a light for others.

You are truly a light for us here in Boston - may God continue to bless your life.

Sincerely
Elaine - Brookline

Jonathan K.,

All of these things fall under the power to "bind an loose" that Christ gave to the Apostles in Matt 16:19 and 18:18. To "bind and loose" are very specific Rabbinic terms that empower the church to govern itself in what is allowed and what is forbidden and in the dispensation of sacramental graces. This includes how the Church handles the forgiveness of various sins (again, read the above scripture passages in context) and the healing of the temporal affects (wounds) of sin.

It is not suprising that you may not have heard of these things as so many of us were not well catechised. Times are changing, however, and two excellent places to go for answers are the EWTN web site (EWTN.com) and the Catholic Answers web site (catholic.com). A copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is also indespensable in learning the faith. I'm sure you local priest could give you further guidance.

Peace in Christ,
TK

I love your joke to the young men discerning the priesthood about not wanting to be photographed because they may be in the witness protection program--or haven't told their girlfriend or mother! Not only are you a wise and holy priest, Cardinal Sean, you also have a great sense of humor! Thanks again for our window into your life and for dispensing your wisdom, albeit humbly, to us blog readers on a weekly basis.

Hello Cardinal Sean,
Just wanna let you know that I have read your blog. Someone here mentions about the dress code while in church. The dress code does not speak a lot about the condition of the heart but then dressing properly while in church shows our respect for God.

I was disturbed to read the article in this morning's Herald about the proceeds from the Easter and Christmas collections going to assist the abusers of the last 30 to 40 years. I assumed that the money was going to help all our retired parish priests. I have always been generous at these collections but will have to re-think my contribution this Easter.

Thanks for telling us about Cardinal Stafford's visit. I'm ignorant about my own faith, I know, but can you tell me please what on earth is a tribunal, what are indulgences, and what is the internal forum and what does it have to do with "sins and censures reserved to the Holy See." I can't find any of these terms in the gospels! Thank you, Cardinal Sean!

Your Emminence,
I read about something regarding cuts in retired priest's funds on another site and I apologize for putting a request in here, I simply am not literate enough in the ways of the web to get a communication to its proper place. Please bear with me. We have a shortage of priests in the Diocese of Cheyenne. Yes we have retired priests, I am the housekeeper for St. Patrick's in Casper and Msgr. O'Neill, a hearty, hale, 77, regularly conducts daily and weekend Masses as well as a TV Mass broadcast throughout the State of Wyoming.

Can you spare some healthy retired priests to come to Wyoming? I think we can house them, feed them and welcome them in our communities. It might be a challenge but then, there are many saintly priests who did their job until the Lord called them home. I guess we shouldn't be worried about the retirement plan in this life, the other provides eternal benefits.

Please help us.

Sincerely,
Ingrid Borah,
Casper, Wy

This may be a trivial issue but I have been fascinated as to why American priests and bishops in general dress very poorly for Mass. Is there a theology behind the often very poor linens used for cassocks? What about the very short cassocks that are only up to the knee. What about the scanty dressing? Is it really poverty that is the cause of less than careful dressing for Mass or something else? In the church that I attend, you can see the priet's armpit when he lifts his hand, his trouser pocket when his chasuble moves.

No wonder the people in the pew care less about what they wear to churh.

It is great that oune of your topics is about the sacrament of Reconciliation and the influence of Father Pio. I have been priest for five years and it is the sacrament where I could feel the love of God more near to me and to the others.
